To Those Who Saw Her Safely Away

The poet won’t buy you any more trouble by trying to say thank you.

You know who you are — and that’s been enough, for a long time.

Nice riding the bus with some of you — even though, it’s true, both of us would have been looking a little ragged.

Yes, the poet’s learned that, along with every other truth of love among us, “thank you” is all too often unacceptable.

But she can say this:

See you there.
