Sonnet: Quality of Mercy

(One of a series of original sonnets written upon Shakespearean themes)

The quality of mercy is not strained
It effortless is — nothing but delight
We wonder how so long we have refrained
From seeing and from doing what’s so right

It is a very uncomfortable
Soul blindly which persist in error’s way —
Must to its growth remain amenable
Keeping in view the inevitable day

It rises from the downward sucking mud
And dark confusion its origins of
Evil abandoning, embracing good
Ready to unconditionally love

And unconditionally to receive
That in which, priorly, could not believe
