Faithful Servant

When circumstance surrounding me
Bore unacceptability —
Thank it once, and thank it twice —
This body always paid the price

Unwilling condone evil talk
Or evil deeds, I chose to walk;
Or expectation suddenly
Shifted detrimentally,

Unwilling moral price to pay,
Peacefully I moved away,
Whether afterward or no
This body knew where it would go

What it would eat, how it would be —
Consented ay to follow me
Into hunger, into fear
Places with no protection near

Other than the angels give
To souls which choose upright to live;
It sat with me in freezing air
Endured the changes of despair

And nights aground without a bed
Each foot placing the next ahead
When too many hurt steps to say
Taken had that selfsame day

Motivating through such pain;
Prepared go to work again
At every task heaven may send —
Faithful servant, to the end!
