Tolerance Schmolerance

Can you write me here a sonnet
With no metric errors on it?

Or would you instead prefer
Rather than iambic pentameter

Some form somewhat less demanding?
What form, then, are you commanding?

Prefer a couplet or quatrain?
No? Funny — I don’t complain

That you cannot — I don’t demand
To my own work you put your hand

Why justification see
For making that demand of me?

(As a poet I refuse
To watch the pois’nous evening news

In fact I keep from out my vision
Every bit of television

So eternity may know
Eliminated radio

And don’t go to movies for
Relaxation any more

Think me borderline insane?
Joseph Campbell did the same)

Instead, I say good for you!
Do all the things that you can do

March and holler, wave a sign
But condemn not my benign

Way of serving greater all
Do not to intolerance fall

(Just like those you protest to)
‘Cause everybody’s not like you

When you can do what I can do
I’ll become another you

Till then leave off your pretense
Diversity of tolerance

Time putting down all others spend:
Might as well be Republican
